America needs increased energy production now more than ever. Gas prices are at record highs. The situation in the oil-producing Middle East is touch and go. Our economy is currently struggling to make it out of recession. All of these factors contribute to the demand that Congress pass an "Energy Bill" that will quench America’s thirst for fuel NOW. Recall that the House passed an Energy Bill last year, but the Democrat-controlled Senate failed to act. Enter a new Congress and the House and Senate are ready to take up the issue again.
AMAZINGLY, some in Congress are planning to use the Energy Bill to finance more land grabs and funnel taxpayer dollars into green coffers! Pay very close attention to the following three items and the Action to Take below. The Energy Bill is for ENERGY PRODUCTION, NOT ENERGY-STIFLING LAND GRABS!
1. The much dreaded Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA) is once AGAIN rearing its ugly head. Rep. "Slick" Billy Tauzin of Louisiana just won’t give up on his CARA baby. As chairman of the House Commerce Committee, the lead committee in charge of the Energy Bill in the House, Rep. Tauzin plans on attaching CARA to the Energy Bill. CARA is the multi-billion dollar land grab trust fund that the greens have been coveting for years. CARA has no business being passed at all—let alone being snuck through as a component of the Energy Bill! 2. Traditional property rights supporter turned green opportunist, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, has added a provision to the Energy Bill that would allow electric utility companies to condemn private property every time they want to put up a power line. This has been strongly opposed by the Western Governors Association, as well as property rights groups. But why is Rep. Joe Barton, a friend of property rights advocates, turning coat? Because his provision EXEMPTS his home state of Texas and only affects the other 49 states!
3. Sen. Lamar Alexander, Tennessee Liberal, has attached a provision to the Energy Bill that would hand over $250 MILLION PER YEAR for land acquisition and grants to extreme environmental groups. This, of course, is in ADDITION to the CARA debacle mentioned above. But there’s a catch. Senator Alexander’s BIG GREEN PAYOUT will only occur IF oil exploration in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is permitted. Of course, every rational American understands that drilling for oil in a small sliver of ANWR is urgently necessary—not to mention environmentally friendly. BUT it is FAR from necessary to hand over $250 MILLION to green groups and land grabbers just because America needs the oil trapped in ANWR!
** Action to Take **
1. Call both of your Senators and your Representative. The Capitol Hill Switchboard number for the House of Representatives is: (202) 225-3121. The number for the Senate is: (202) 224-3121. Simply ask for your Representative or Senators by name. Then, once you are transferred to their office, request to speak with the staff person in charge of property rights, the Energy Bill, or ANWR.
Tell them to NOT ALLOW CARA to be added to the Energy Bill! America needs energy, NOT more land acquisition that stifles energy production! There should also be NO land condemnation by private or public power companies added to the Energy Bill. This goes for ANY state—NOT just Texas! And your message on Lamar Alexander and ANWR is simple: NO GREEN BRIBE MONEY FOR OIL!
