The American Policy Center has long been opposed to the Faith-based Initiative because we know that it is merely a vehicle for government to get its hands on the inner workings of private charities and other organizations. As it turns out, it is an even bigger, lefty grab bag than we previously thought.
Deep inside S. 256 (the "CARE Act") lay two sections that would give massive, unfair tax benefits to The Nature Conservancy and other land trusts. Sections 106 and 107 of the CARE Act provide a 25% tax cut on capital gains of land sales to environmental groups and government agencies—but not to individual property owners! Sections 106 and 107 seek to coerce more and more people into selling their land to groups that will either lock it up and bar it from all use, or sell it to the government for profit.
This would give radical environmental groups an incredible advantage when competing with private charities or individuals for property. Not to mention, it will destroy the tax base of rural communities that are dominated by public land holdings. It will also be devastating to family businesses, farms and ranches that attempt to keep property in private hands by selling to relatives.
Moreover, even though The Nature Conservancy and liberals in Congress are trying to sell this provision as a tax break for land sellers, in reality, it will only benefit the BUYERS—provided those buyers are land trusts or government agencies of course! Land trusts will inevitably reduce their offers for land purchases because they will have up to a 25% bidding advantage over all other buyers. Land trusts will be able to reduce the price they are willing to pay for a seller’s property, and still offer the seller more profit because of the exclusive 25% capital gains tax benefit that the seller receives when he or she sells to a land trust. This advantage for land trusts will drive out competition from other buyers and property values will decline as land trusts become the only buyers on the market.
It’s time to defend private property rights! Why should The Nature Conservancy and other land trusts get massive tax advantages in the so-called "Faith-based Initiative?"

U.N. Grows More Irrelevant by the Hour
President Bush has more or less declared the United Nations irrelevant. Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, on the Sean Hannity radio program recently, expressed his desire that the U.S. leave the U.N. Indeed, many elected officials are finally beginning to see the danger of being associated with a world body that is downright anti-American.
With Libya getting ready to head up the U.N. Commission on Human Rights and Iraq set to take control of the U.N. Disarmament Council, the time has never been better for us to scream from the rooftops: "Get the U.S. out of the U.N.!"
