Tancredo Offers Bill to Sink Mexican ID Card

February 12, 2003 Volume 6, Issue 3

It’s called the "matricula consular," the Mexican ID card. It is the Mexican government’s way of circumventing U.S. immigration law, and forcing amnesty for illegal aliens down America’s throat. Mexican president, Vincente Fox, has instructed his 47 consulates here in the United States to issue these Mexican ID cards to Mexicans residing illegally in the United States. Over a million cards were issued in 2002.

The card resembles a California State driver’s license. It lists the holder’s birth date, place of birth and U.S. address. The Mexican government has been lobbying U.S. government agencies and private industries to accept the card. Their goal is to make it easier for illegal immigrants to obtain taxpayer-funded, U.S. government services, open bank accounts and obtain jobs. So far their efforts are working. Today more than 800 U.S. police departments, 66 banks, 15 cities and 13 states accept the card as valid ID.

This card is fueling the firestorm of illegal immigration. It is severely damaging our national security. It is an outrage and it MUST be stopped.

Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) has had enough of this illegal infiltration. Rep. Tancredo has recently introduced H.R. 502, a bill that would "require identification that may be used in obtaining Federal public benefits to meet restrictions ensuring that it is secure and verifiable." In other words: Bye-bye matricula consular.

We MUST create a groundswell of support for Rep. Tancredo’s H.R. 502!

The Dirty Half-Dozen

Six Senate Republicans recently decided to turn their backs on America’s energy future—just to appeal to the extreme environmental lobby. Senators John McCain (AZ), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Susan Collins (ME), Lincoln Chafee (RI), Peter Fitzgerald (IL) and Mike DeWine (OH) recently backed away from a plan to attach oil exploration in the Alaskan National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) to a 2004 spending bill.

Recall that last year the Republican-led House of Representatives convincingly passed an energy bill that would have allowed oil drilling in a miniscule 2,000 acres of the 19.5 million acre refuge. The Democrat-led Senate, however, killed the ANWR provision. Drilling in ANWR could produce as many as 16 billion barrels of oil and significantly relieve our dependency on foreign oil at time when our nation is watching gas prices skyrocket. Even President Clinton’s own Energy Department supported drilling for oil and natural gas in ANWR and touted that it could be done in an environmentally safe manner.

Perhaps these six turncoats need to be reminded that their job is to look out for America’s energy future, NOT hand out political favors to the radical environmental lobby.
