Congress is back in session and the House Resources
Committee has a new chairman. Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA) was named last Thursday
to head the committee, much to the chagrin of radical environmentalists, and to
the cheers of property rights advocates. The Resources committee is powerful,
as it has jurisdiction over many issues vital to property rights and public land
usage.
Rep. Pombo has been a long-time champion of sound
science in environmental policy and property rights protection. He’s has a long
history of working to bring sanity to the Endangered Species Act, stopping land
grab legislation and promoting multiple use of public lands. Rep. Pombo as House
Resources Chairman is a HUGE boon to the grassroots. Now when we raise our voices,
we might actually be heard!
** Action
to Take **
1. Call Rep. Pombo and congratulate him on being
named chairman of the House Resources Committee. Explain that you are a property
rights advocate, and that you’re excited to have a property rights champion heading
the committee. Rep. Pombo: (202) 225-1947.

McCain and Lieberman: Green and Greener
Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman
(D-CT) have recently teamed up to devastate the U.S. economy. The two kicked off
the new session of Congress by announcing their plans to push Kyoto-like legislation
in the name of stopping global warming. Specifically, they want U.S. industry
to cut carbon dioxide emissions (an inevitable byproduct of just about every form
of energy production) to year 2000 levels by 2010, and 1990 levels by 2016. This
is the same sort of hare-brained proposal the United States Senate shot down 95-0
when offered to us by the United Nations in 1997.
The entire concept of man-made global warming
is theory—and weak theory at that. This proposal has nothing to do with sound
science and everything to do with politics. Lieberman recently announced his bid
for the 2004 presidency, and obviously plans to make global warming hysteria an
integral part of his campaign (Gore must have taught him well). In addition, if
he can scare investors in the energy industry, and help keep the economy down,
all the better for him and the Democrats in 2004. Meanwhile, the rest of America
drowns in the wake of his selfish ambition.
Who knows why McCain is jumping on the environmental
extremist bandwagon? He was one of the 95 Senators who shot down this sort of
lunacy in ’97. He also blasted the Democrats so-called "energy" bill
during the last Congress for being loaded with the same sort of draconian provisions
that he now claims to advocate. Perhaps he just misses the media spotlight.
Regardless of their motivation, the McCain/Lieberman
proposal would destroy America’s economy, and starve a nation that’s already ravenous
for energy. All this for absolutely no perceived environmental benefit.
Thankfully, the McCain/Lieberman proposal must
pass through the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and the new chairman
of that committee, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), has expressed no interest in matter.
Nevertheless, expect the media, the greens and the McCain/Lieberman spin machine
to orchestrate an all out assault on anyone who stands in the way of this boondoggle.
Therefore, we must remain vigilant in our fight!
* Action
to Take *
1. Call Senator James Inhofe and thank him for
standing up for common sense, and rejecting the McCain/Lieberman energy restriction
plan. Sen. Inhofe: (202) 224-4721.
2. Call both of your Senators and tell them to
fight against the McCain/Lieberman global warming proposal! Senate Switchboard:
(202) 224-3121 (simply ask for your Senators by name).

APC Releases Sovereignty Vote Index for the 107th Congress
We have just released our second, biannual edition
of the Sovereignty Vote Index. This index rates every U.S. House Representative

Once again, the results were surprising.
You may view the index at http://www.americanpolicy.org/sover4.htm.
You may also purchase your own published copy of the index, which includes statistics,
heroes and zeroes, and anti-sovereignty legislation for which to watch out, by
calling APC at (540) 341-8911. Each copy is only five dollars.
*Note: 2003 is quickly shaping up to be
a vital year for constitutional liberty. Good patriots are defending our freedoms
on many different fronts. We want to make APC’s Action Alert System the most effective
