Radical Feminist UN Treaty Jeopardizes National Sovereignty

August 7, 2002, Volume 5 Issue 9

After sitting in the dustbin since Jimmy Carter was president, Democrats have resurrected The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). It was recently passed in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and now awaits a vote by the full Senate. It must be stopped.

CEDAW is a thinly veiled attempt by the United Nations to influence the policies of independent nations—including the U.S. Article 17 of CEDAW creates a panel of 23 "experts" (read: global governance bureaucrats) to monitor compliance of the treaty. If ratified by the U.S. Senate, CEDAW’s panel of U.N. thugs would have the ability to scrutinize U.S. laws, and lobby for every feminist pipedream you can imagine. CEDAW has already begun lobbying for legislation in countries that were foolish enough to ratify the treaty. Just what are CEDAW’s concerns? Take a look:

- abolishing Mother’s Day

- creating quotas and affirmative action

- establishing government-paid, global village daycare

- population control and abortion

The United Nations has no business concerning itself with the laws of sovereign nations! It is unfathomable that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee would surrender U.S. sovereignty at all—much less to satisfy a radical feminist social movement within the U.N. CEDAW must be stopped!

**Action to Take**

1. Call President Bush and urge him to unsign the CEDAW treaty. White House: (202) 456-1111.

2. Because the Senate is currently in recess, you can make a HUGE IMPACT! Contact both of your Senators in their district offices and DEMAND that they vote against CEDAW. Attend town hall meetings and write letters-to-the-editor of local newspapers urging the Senate to oppose CEDAW.

Armed Pilots Bill Gaining Momentum

On July 18th, APC News Wire reported that although the House had overwhelmingly passed a common sense bill to allow airline pilots to carry firearms, the same bill would have a tough time getting past the Senate. That’s when APC’s dedicated activists sprung into action. We are happy to report that thanks to you, Senator Bob Smith’s (R-NH) "Arming Pilots Against Terrorism and Cabin Defense Act of 2002" (S. 2554) is gaining momentum! Since APC put out the alert, eight more Senators have signed on as cosponsors of Smith’s bill, bringing the total to 25.

In another big development, the Bush Administration announced that John Magaw is no longer head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Magaw had been bitterly opposed to allowing pilots to properly arm themselves against terrorists. Is Magaw’s ouster a sign that President Bush is thinking of changing his stance against arming pilots? It could be, BUT the President will only support armed pilots and S. 2554 IF HE HEARS FROM US!

Keep up the great work! The fight is far from over. We’ve evened the playing field a bit, but still must continue to urge President Bush and our Senators to support S. 2554!

**Action to Take**

1. Call both of your Senators and DEMAND that they support S. 2554. Allowing pilots to carry firearms is one of the most common sense measures we can take to prevent terrorism in the sky. Senate Switchboard: (202) 224-3121.

2. Call the White House and urge President Bush to support armed airline pilots. White House Switchboard: (202) 456-1111.

"Sawgrass Rebellion" Forms to Save Property from Land Grab

The folks in South Florida are fed up. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) is purposefully flooding property owners off of their land. With nowhere to turn, the poor folks in Florida let out a cry for help. Luckily, the folks from the Paragon Foundation heard their cries. The Sawgrass Rebellion was born.

On July 20, 2002, the third annual Freedom 21 conference (cosponsored by APC) adopted the Sawgrass Rebellion as a priority project to launch a national plan of action against the Wildlands Project and all its land-grabbing counterparts.

Private landowners in South Florida are being forced off their land by a variety of coercive land-use policies being imposed under the banner of "Everglades Restoration," endangered species protection, open space, Heritage Areas, and a host of other programs.

Two caravans, one from Klamath Falls, Oregon, and one from Darby/Columbus, Ohio, are planning to form and make their way to Naples, Florida, as a sign of solidarity and protest. Along the way, the caravans will attend pro-property rights rallies and gather more folks for the journey. Convening in Naples on October 19, everyone will be treated to a massive rally, complete with live music and food.

Landowners across the nation are FIGHTING BACK!

**Action to Take**
