America Needs Oil—NOT Emissions Restrictions!

May 16, 2002 Volume 5, Issue 5

Democrats in Congress, along with their extreme environmentalist buddies, are holding America’s energy future hostage. For ransom, Daschle and his cohorts are pining for a provision in the energy bill that would essentially institute the energy restrictions of the (failed) Kyoto Protocol. If they succeed, they will damage the U.S. economy and drive energy prices sky-high.

Here’s the situation. The House of Representatives passed an energy bill last Fall that included a provision that would allow for much needed oil exploration in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The Senate recently passed a different energy bill that does NOT allow for oil harvesting in ANWR, and worse still, includes a provision (title XI) that would force companies to report reductions in so-called "greenhouse gas" emissions to the federal government. This "reporting" would obviously pave the way for regulation of emissions, thereby stifling energy production for a nation that is already energy-starved. Now, the House and the Senate must come together in conference to create one solitary bill on which they both agree. Democrats are trying to sucker Republicans into accepting their draconian emissions plan, in exchange for the Democrats allowing for oil exploration in ANWR.

Our nation needs energy independence and more domestic oil production. Therefore, harvesting oil in ANWR is common sense policy. But drilling in ANWR is not worth a trade for a provision that would harm our economy.

Republicans must stand firm! They have the American public on their side! They should force the Democrats to accept the ANWR provision WITHOUT trading away our nation’s economic health in the process!

**Action to Take**

1. Call both of your Senators and your Representative and tell them to fight hard for oil exploration in ANWR! Also, tell them hold firm against the Senate Democrats’ emissions reporting provision! Capitol Hill Senate Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. Capitol Hill House Switchboard: (202) 225-3121.

President Bush Rejects UN’s International Criminal Court!

Shortly after the UN announced that they were proceeding with the creation of their International Criminal Court (ICC), APC sent out a News Wire, urging our supporters to phone the White House and tell President Bush to denounce the ICC, and rescind Clinton’s signature from the ICC treaty. Guess what? Our phone calls worked! President Bush has publicly denounced the ICC and stated that the United States will NOT participate in the UN court in any way!

This is a HUGE victory. Congratulations on a job well done! If you get a chance, please call the White House and thank President Bush for listening to our pleas and denouncing the UN’s criminal court. White House: (202) 456-1111.

National ID Monster Rears its Ugly Head

Two Virginia congressmen have introduced a bill, that if passed, would create a full-fledged national identification card. Reps. Jim Moran (Democrat) and Tom Davis (Republican) have teamed up to sponsor the "Driver’s License Modernization Act of 2002" (H.R. 4633).

Moran and Davis, in bold fashion, are not trying to camouflage their national ID proposal, like so many before them. Their bill openly calls for citizens to be required to carry a new driver’s license imbedded with a computer chip. That chip would contain the cardholder’s biometric information, most likely a face print, retinal scan or DNA.

Moran and Davis are shamelessly using September 11 to push their big-brother legislation. They are playing on people’s fears. National ID cards will do nothing to prevent terrorism, because as everyone knows, in order to obtain a new ID card, you have to provide ID. And if the ID you provide is false, then you’ll obtain a false ID card. All this new national identification card will provide is a false sense of security. Meanwhile, the entire nation will be stamped, documented and monitored by the federal government.

We must stop this insanity!

**Action to Take**

1. Call your Representative and tell him or her NOT to support H.R. 4633. Also, tell your Congressman that any form of national ID system is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE! We must create an outcry against all forms of national identification! Capitol Hill House Switchboard: (202) 225-3121.

Your Help Needed to Stop Land Grab!

Last month, APC News Wire reported on a land grab taking place in West Virginia. Citizens along the New River are about to lose their homes unless we all act FAST. You may read the specifics of the story on our website at http://www.americanpolicy.org/prop/hinton.htm. Here’s a quick recap: The WV Dept. of Transportation along with the Park Service want to construct a scenic parkway along the New River. This means that any homes within the "view shed" of the parkway have to go. Property is being snatched and dreams are being ruined. The land-grabbers claim they need the land for environmental reasons, but they have yet to submit an environmental impact study!

**Action to Take**

1. We have until June 7 to mail in comments on the proposed parkway. WE MUST FLOOD THEIR OFFICES WITH MAIL. We have to act fast. Please mail your comments to: Mr. James E. Sothen, Director of Engineering Division, State Capitol Complex Building 5, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. East, Charleston, WV 25305-0430. Tell Mr. Sothen that land grabs should not be tolerated and that you oppose the New River Parkway!
