Ted Turner Murders Trees and Funds Radicals

January 31, 2001 Volume 4, Issue 1

Avowed leftist and media mogul, Ted Turner, has been pumping money into the coffers of the radical environmental group, Rainforest Action Network (RAN). RAN was one of the organizing groups behind the WTO protests that turned into riots. While their name implies they are dedicated solely to issues revolving around rainforests, RAN is active in anti-logging campaigns in the U.S. and is dedicated to promoting an anti-capitalist “sustainable” agenda.

Ted Turner’s funding of RAN is highly hypocritical considering Turner himself actively logs his own forestland at Vermejo Park in northern Mexico. The Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise has set up a website to expose RAN’s activities and beliefs. Says the Center’s Vice President, Ron Arnold, “RAN calls timber company, Boise Cascade, and paper seller, Staples, ‘tree murderers.’ But RAN doesn’t call Ted Turner anything except ‘Sir.’”

**ACTION TO TAKE**

1. Go to the website www.ranamuck.org/sendform1.htm to send an email message to Ted Turner. Bury him under a pile of protest! Demand that Ted Turner: Stop funding the radical Rainforest Action Network!

Rep. Ron Paul Takes Aim at Privacy Protection

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) wasted no time in setting his pro-liberty agenda for the 107th Congress. Rep. Paul has introduced H.R. 220, the “Identity Theft Prevention Act,” which would outlaw the use of the Social Security number as an identifier and forbid the federal government from using any standard identifiers. Under Rep. Paul’s bill, American citizens would be issued new, randomly generated, Social Security numbers. These numbers would only be used for the redemption of Social Security benefits.  Said Dr. Paul:

“Congress has a moral responsibility to address this problem as it was Congress which transformed the Social Security number into a national identifier. Thanks to Congress, today no American can get a job, open a bank account, get a professional license, or even get a drivers’ license without presenting their Social Security number…

“I call on all of my colleagues to join me in putting an end to the federal government’s unconstitutional use of national identifiers to monitor the actions of private citizens.”

Liberty’s strongest voice in Congress has spoken. Now it’s our turn to help Rep. Paul garner support for the Identity Theft Protection Act.

**ACTION TO TAKE **

1. Call your Representative and urge him to support the Identity Theft Prevention Act. Your Congressman should be dedicated to protecting your constitutional right to privacy. If he or she is, then they should have no problem cosponsoring H.R. 220. Make no doubt about it, failure to sign on with H.R. 220 is a direct slap in the face of our Constitution. Call the Capitol Hill House Switchboard at: (202) 225-3121. Simply ask for your Representative by name.

Rep. Bob Barr Hits the Ground Running

Rep. Bob Barr (R-GA) introduced several key bills on the first the day of  the 107th Congress. Among the bills was H.R. 23, the “Presidential Order Limitation Act.” This piece of legislation calls for a review of presidential executive orders in order to halt the abuse of executive orders that was so prevalent during the Clinton reign. Special attention needs to be paid to executive orders, as Clinton was able to use them as a means of circumventing our legislative process to unilaterally create and implement his own legislation. Rep. Barr’s bill is the first step in protecting our legislative process under the Constitution.

Congressman Barr also introduced legislation aimed at protecting Second Amendment rights. He has introduced H.R. 123, the “Firearms Heritage Protection Act,” which would protect gun manufacturers and sellers from frivolous lawsuits when guns are used to commit crimes. Many firearms manufacturers have been facing the threat of extinction at the hands of bloodsucking trial lawyers, who ride the anti-gun lobby’s PR train all the way to their next payday. In fact, the costly litigation, mostly brought by state and local governments, has driven the price of firearms so high that many Americans can no longer afford to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

**ACTION TO TAKE**

1. Call your Representative and urge him or her to cosponsor and support Rep. Bob Barr’s “Presidential Order Limitation Act” and “Firearms Heritage Protection Act.” Capitol Hill House Switchboard: (202) 225-3121. Simply ask for your Representative by name.

***NOTE TO APC ACTION ALERT SUBSCRIBERS***

Recently, APC has received much feedback from our subscribers, urging us to include the email addresses and fax numbers of the Congressmen we single out for action. While we will begin including the fax numbers, we will not include the email addresses—let us tell you why. It is our experience that email is not nearly as effective as phone calls, faxes and letters. Just as email can be sent and stored in mass quantities—it can also be deleted in mass quantities in a matter of seconds. Therefore, little attention is paid to it. So while it may be easier and cheaper for you to voice your opinion through email, it is also easier and cheaper for the person at the other end to ignore you.

Thanks much for your feedback. As always, we appreciate suggestions on how to improve our very effective and successful action alert system.
