Campaign to Get US out of the WTO Heating Up

April 13, 2000 Volume 3, Issue 7

Catherine Ellis, Editor

Phone calls, letters and e-mails are still needed to your Congressman in support of Rep. Ron Paul’s efforts to pass H. J. RES. 90, a resolution to withdraw the United States from the World Trade Organization. The U.S. Constitution confers upon Congress the power "to regulate Commerce with foreign Nations." Yet, as Congress has relinquished some of its duties to the "Imperial Presidency," it is set to relinquish a major power—the power to regulate commerce—to an international bureaucracy! The passage of this Resolution to withdraw from the WTO bureaucracy will be a major victory for American Sovereignty.

An inside source on Capitol Hill estimates that the vote on H.J. Res. 90 will occur the last week of May. That means we only have a few weeks to educate our friends and acquaintances, to build enough support to convince our Congressmen to pass this Resolution. We must begin to contact our Congressman NOW and keep calling until the vote!

"The U.S. should be part of a global economy – but not part of global government."— Rep. Ron Paul

***ACTION TO TAKE***

1. Join Rep. Paul’s "electronic march" on Washington in support of H.J. Res. 90. Visit www.StopWTO.org. By going to this web site you can see if your Representative is currently a cosponsor and if not, you may send him/her an e-mail through this site urging his/her support.

2. Call your Congressman and request that he/she cosponsors and votes for H.J. Res. 90 which would withdraw the approval of the United States from the agreement establishing the World Trade Organization. Capitol Hill Switchboard (202) 225-3121.

The City Set High on the Hill

Remember the House Banking Scandal or the House Post Office Scandal of 1992 when Members of Congress were caught participating in illegal schemes to raid the Treasury? Well, the saga of the ethically challenged continues with recently released data from the IRS stating that Members of Congress and their staffs owe approximately $10.5 million in unpaid taxes.

Yes, you read right. In this period of unprecedented prosperity, we are also taxed more than at any other time in U.S. history. Incredibly, there are some in Congress (that same body whose appetites for your money appears insatiable) who fail to adhere to the same tax laws in which they preside over, laws they administer to you. Sound hypocritical? It gets worse. It was just two years ago that this body voted for the Internal Revenue Service Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998, a law that called for the immediate firing for those agency workers who failed to pay their taxes. Doubt they would pass a law to hold themselves to the same standards.

Lest by any means we single out just Congress, may it be noted that this $10.5 million is just a slice of the pie. The total amount of taxes owed by those employed by the federal government is estimated at $2.4 billion.

Apparently the bottom line is this: Americans are constrained by law to work until May in order to pay enough money to appease the insatiable federal government. Nevertheless, many federal government employees, whose paycheck is subsidized by these taxes, refuse to do the same. How fair. In another slap to the taxpayers’ faces, the federal IRS agency has not released the names of those federal employees who have not paid their taxes. How fitting.

***ACTION TO TAKE***

As you and other U.S. citizens are rushing to file your own tax return, call your Congressman and express your outrage that Congress fails to adhere to the same rules that they demand of us. (202) 225-3121.

Why Senator Lott Makes Us Dizzy…

Just when you want to shout, "Three cheers for Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott!!!" he does something so outrageous, so egregious, to leave you in a state of confusion muttering, "Huh???"

THE GOOD

Last week Senator Lott became a cosponsor of the American Land Sovereignty Protection Act. Thank you to all of you who made calls to the Senate in support of this bill. This is a MAJOR victory in the war to keep America’s land free from the UN bureaucracy and its policy setting agenda and it is because of your effort that we are making the progress we have on this issue. We also would like to thank the Senate Majority Leader for his support and hope he will use his powerful position to bring S. 510 to a full Senate vote.

THE BAD

Unfortunately, that isn’t all Senator Lott has been up to these days. As reported in "Inside the Ring" of the Washington Times, our Senate Majority Leader is about to cut a deal with the Clinton Administration to scuttle the House-passed Taiwan Security Enhancement Act that would strengthen U.S. ties to Taiwan in favor of a Clinton promise to instead sell them four Aegis destroyers. Did we mention that two of the $1 billion warships will be built in Lott’s home state of Mississippi? Did we mention that some in the Pentagon wants to "allay Chinese fears" by offering a "dumbed-down" version of the warship, excluding missile defense-capable software and hardware, and Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles"?

How grossly inappropriate for a Senator to compromise U.S. relations with Taiwan, a loyal ally, for some good ‘ole fashioned pork barreling. The people of Taiwan are dedicated to freedom and liberty. They fought for their country against the Chinese Communists fifty years ago and were forced to flee to the island of Formosa where today, they still fight for democracy, for their existence. They live under the constant fear that the Chinese Communists will invade their land, as they have verbally threatened they will. They look to the U.S. for continued help and yet, we are concerned of appeasing the Chinese, whom ironically have also said that even war with the U.S. is inevitable.

This is an issue of national security, Senator Lott, not a money game. Shame on you for putting greed above liberty.

***ACTION TO TAKE***

To express your gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott for cosponsoring S. 510, or to express your outrage over the possibility of his scuttling the House-passed Taiwan Security (or both) call him at (202) 224-3135.
