Center Delivers Petitions to House
Speaker
Calls for Reno's Removal from Office
Washington, DC - Capping an effort begun in late 1999, on May 2nd
Tom DeWeese, president of the American Policy Center, presented more
than 23,000 petitions and a letter calling on the Speaker of the
House, Dennis Hastert, to seek the removal from office of
Attorney General Janet Reno.
A petition program by the Center, a grassroots
activist think tank, has secured more than 23,000 signatures calling for
the removal of Reno. On April 27th, the Law Enforcement Alliance of
America, representing over 65,000 members,
initiated a similar petition drive. Calling the use of force in the Elian
Gonzales case "outrageous and unwarranted", DeWeese described
the Department of
Justice as "out of control" in the May 2nd letter to Rep.
Hastert.
"Her rule at the Justice Department has
overseen the destruction of the FBI's once pristine reputation as the
world's number one law enforcement agency,"
wrote DeWeese. "The Department of Justice has become increasingly
politicized, protecting and shielding
the Clinton Administration and its allies
from being subject for punishment by law for their crimes and corruption,
while undermining and targeting its foes."
Competing polls and surveys have flooded
Washington, DC. Despite initial approval
of the INS seizure of Elian Gonzales, a voter referendum conducted less than a week later on Vote.Com
expressed an overwhelming 59% of respondent's
disapproval of the government's actions. "It took a year before
public opinion changed regarding the
removal of the President from office," noted
DeWeese, but these and other Internet surveys and petition efforts all
demonstrate the widespread awareness
that the Fourth Amendment was totally ignored
in pursuit of White House objectives," said DeWeese.
On April 27th, a former New Jersey Superior Court
Judge, Andrew Napolitano,
appearing on the Fox News' Hannity & Colmes program, asserted that Attorney General Reno should be
indicted in Florida for the abduction of Elian
Gonzalez. "The search warrant was unlawful," said Napolitano.
"The seizure of the
boy was in direct violation of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
And (Florida Governor) Jeb Bush should go before a grand jury in
Florida and ask that Janet Reno be
indicted for kidnapping."
The Center's petitions were delivered along with
the letter calling on the
House Speaker to seek the removal of Janet Reno. "If ever anyone in
public office needed a pink slip, it is the Attorney General," said
DeWeese.
